EXCERPT
The prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), a neurodegenerative disorder, has approached epidemic proportions as a result of increased longevity. In absolute numbers, AD currently affects 4.5 million Americans who are ages 65 or older and will afflict 14 million by 2050 (Hebert, Scherr, Bienias, Bennett, & Evans, 2003). Older adults with AD report that assistance in promoting daily function is one of the most important aspects for their continuing sense of identity and independence (Phinney, 1998).
